How the priests of Israel broke the people's faith (Meditation on the Crowning of Thorns)

Jesus, why did the Pharisees take thee in the night?

If we take him in the day, the people will rebel.

When the people the next day, saw thee crowned by Pilate’s hands,

Where went the faith of they whom the Pharisees did fear?

If we take him in the day, the people will rebel.

If the Romans with the priests seized thee in their sight,

Did you know that by their faith the people would come fight?

And when they had platted a crown of thorns,

They put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand:

And they bowed the knee, and mocked, saying,

Hail, King of the Jews!

Is this the King? Would not he smite these men?

How could we believe this was the Messiah we had prayed?

The Messiah of the Jews would have these Romans slain.

But this Messiah, the Messiah of the Jews, he—

He would not allow his people to be mocked!

If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross!

Jesus, how did you feel, witness to your people’s broken faith?

Their will to kill, to drive the Gentiles off.

How did it feel to see their expectations failed?

God, how did it feel to see your priests break thy people’s faith?

On the ass, riding to Jerusalem, they laid a path of leaves,

But when they saw thee crowned, turned in by greedy scribes,

The people must have felt that what the elders said was right.

Would the Son of God be judged by a Gentile’s hand!

He sits upon the stands, and offers this for his defense!

Art thou the King of the Jews? Thou Sayest.

And come, when we ask, we hear what he hast said.

Art thou the Christ? If I tell you, ye will not believe.

Art thou the Son of God? Ye say that I am.

The Messiah of Israel would smite these Romans’ heads,

But as this man will not, he’s not but a fraud and magician,

Whose powers no doubt, truly came, from Hell’s daemons.

For having fooled all ye, for ye, we crucify him!

God, what love ye had, to war for all our souls.

As a king left by his men you advanced the line alone.

You, Lord are a man of war. Love is your sword.

You fought with Love through Earth and Hell,

As you did then, crowned with thorns, you do now.

We love You more than the god of the Jews.

We love You because You loved us more than the god of the Jews.
